(PresseBox) (Wies, June 23, 2022) Blood pressure is an elementary factor in medical diagnostics. With the development of the world's first non-invasive blood pressure measurement without a cuff and calibration, VIE Med is making the collection of important health parameters much easier.
Worldwide, more than 17 million people die every year from cardiovascular diseases, making them one of the most common causes of death. In most cases, serious illnesses are the result of long-standing pre-existing conditions, such as untreated high blood pressure. Experts therefore generally recommend regular blood pressure checks and other methods for early detection. In addition, blood pressure measurements and ECGs are standard diagnostic procedures in hospitals. A wide variety of injuries and illnesses have a direct impact on blood pressure and heart rate, or can be diagnosed based on changes in these.
By developing the world's first technical method for non-invasive measurement of systolic and diastolic blood pressure and other vital parameters, without using a traditional blood pressure cuff and without prior calibration of the measuring device, VIE Med GmbH from western Styria in Austria is creating a basis for optimizing cardiovascular diagnostics. The combination of sensor technology and an algorithm for evaluating the measurement data developed by the medium-sized high-tech company from Wies allows paramedics, general practitioners, hospital staff and even patients themselves to measure their blood pressure literally by placing their fingers on the blood pressure. The use of a traditional blood pressure cuff is not necessary, nor is complex calibration of the measuring device necessary.
The world's only technology has proven itself in spontaneous measurements and can significantly increase the efficiency of processes in hospitals and medical practices as well as in the emergency services. This relieves the burden on medical staff and speeds up diagnostics in the interest of the patient. In particular, the new technology makes it much easier to carry out long-term measurements.
"Anyone who has ever experienced a 24-hour blood pressure measurement knows how unpleasant and prone to failure a whole day with a cuff on the upper arm, associated cabling and measurements every half hour is," explains Johann Scheicher, CEO of VIE Med GmbH. "With our cuff-free blood pressure measurement, we have achieved what no manufacturer before us has managed: We measure and document numerous vital parameters such as blood pressure, ECG, pulse wave, SDNN value, without traditional cuffs and without time-consuming presetting. The accuracy of the measured values meets the high requirements of a medical application."
VIE Med uses the technology developed since the company was founded in 2019 in four models of the "Scheicher Diagnostics" product line. The products for private users are already available through the company's online shop. The MBP 100 model consists of a mobile device housing that is barely larger than a matchbox. The spontaneous measurement is carried out by placing three fingers on marked electrodes. The measured values are transferred to an APP and can thus be read on the display of a smartphone or tablet PC.
The MBP 400 model, which is also intended for private use, is suitable as a "wearable wristband" for long-term measurements. Worn on the wrist, electrodes on the base of the case record the vital signs and also transmit them to the MBP Monitoring App.
The MBP 200 model is intended for medical or clinical use. As a dual measuring system, it records both peripheral and central blood pressure and thus provides, among other things, indications of potential arteriosclerosis.
With the MBP 300, VIE Med offers a model for use in intensive care medicine and diagnostics. Applied as a patch to the upper body, it enables complete 24-hour monitoring.
The MBP 100, 300 and 400 models are currently being tested for approval as a medical device as part of a clinical study. The start of a corresponding procedure for the MBP 200 model is planned for autumn 2022.
"We have set ourselves the goal of establishing the Scheicher Diagnostics brand on the market," emphasizes Scheicher. "With cuffless blood pressure measurement, we want to make a valuable contribution to improving and further developing cardiovascular diagnostics and thus improving both early detection and treatment success."
